The Shopping Cart That Thinks for Itself

Here’s something you don’t hear every day: our Director of Photography, Mark Schulze, set his alarm for 3 AM. Voluntarily.

Now, if you know Mark, you know he is not what you’d call a morning person by default. But when Drovver (the innovative tech company behind a truly next-generation computerized shopping cart) came to Crystal Pyramid Productions with their project, Mark didn’t hesitate for a second. He rolled out of bed in the dark, loaded up the gear, and made the drive to Jensen’s Market in Point Loma while most of San Diego was still dreaming.

Why the pre-dawn pilgrimage? Simple. The star of this video was the cart itself, and you can’t exactly ask a shopper to please stop existing while you get your shot. The store had to be empty, pristine, and ready for its close-up. Jensen’s was gracious enough to open their doors for us in those quiet hours before the morning rush, and the result was footage with a clean, uncluttered look that lets Drovver’s technology speak for itself.

The Cart Is Smarter Than Your Phone

And what technology it is. Drovver’s computerized shopping cart is genuinely impressive, the kind of innovation that makes you stop and think, Why didn’t anyone do this sooner? These aren’t your grandmother’s wobbly four-wheeled contraptions with the one bad wheel that always pulls left. These carts are intelligent. They track your shopping list, guide you through the store, and interact with the customer in ways that turn a routine grocery run into something almost… enjoyable. (I know. Shocking.)

When a client gives us a product this interesting to work with, our job becomes less about manufacturing excitement and more about getting out of the way and letting the product shine. That’s exactly what Mark did.

A God’s-Eye View of the Grocery Aisle

Of course, we couldn’t resist one particularly cinematic touch.

Mark brought in a drone for what turned out to be one of the most visually arresting shots of the whole production: a sweeping overhead view of a woman pushing the Drovver cart through the aisles. From up above, you see the geometry of the store in a whole new way: the long parallel rows, the clean lines, the quiet choreography of a single shopper and her very smart cart moving through it all. It’s the kind of shot that makes viewers lean forward a little.

Drone work in a grocery store is no small feat, by the way. Tight spaces, fluorescent lighting, reflective surfaces. It requires patience and precision. Mark pulled it off beautifully, as he tends to do when left to his own devices at 3 in the morning with a drone and a mission.

Point Loma’s Hidden Gem

A word about Jensen’s Market, while we’re at it. If you haven’t been, it’s one of those neighborhood grocery stores that feels like it was built by people who actually like food. Tucked into Point Loma, it has a loyal following and a personality all its own. Filming there, even in the silent, shadowy hours before opening, gave the video a real, lived-in authenticity that a sterile studio environment never could have provided. The space told its own story, and Drovver’s cart fit right in.

When the Dedication Shows

What strikes me most about this project, looking back, is what it took to get those shots: a 3 AM wake-up call, a drone threading through grocery aisles, a store generously opened ahead of business hours. None of that appears on screen, of course. The viewer just sees a sleek, capable cart gliding through a beautiful store. But that invisible effort, that dedication, is exactly what separates a video that looks good from one that actually does its job.

We’re proud of this one. And we’re especially proud of Mark, who has proven once again that great cinematography sometimes requires sacrificing a perfectly good night’s sleep.
