Do you remember AMC Date Night?

AMC Date Night was a clever way for AMC to add interest to classic movies. Layered between the movie and commercial interruptions these “bumpers” featured a guy or a gal looking for a date. During each “bumper,” this guy or gal would be asking questions of a “candidate.” By the end of the movie, that guy or gal would choose which of four hotties they wanted to have a date with.

When “AMC Date Night came to San Diego,” Crystal Pyramid Productions assisted the producer in locating the perfect spot to set up a red couch with a scenic view of San Diego in the background. This location was atop a roof in Coronado during January so it got pretty cold up there.

Patty Mooney was the field sound mixer while Mark Schulze was Production Coordinator. We shot for several nights atop the roof in the cold San Diego evenings. The San Diego bumpers appeared with movies including “An American Werewolf in London,” “Goldfinger” and “Dazed and Confused.”

Audio Technician, Patty Mooney, had some special challenges on this shoot. The first was it was very cold at night. She bundled up in her signature green down vest as she monitored two channels of audio on her sound mixer. Meanwhile the talent shivered on Date Night’s signature red couch. Placement of the lavalier microphone also proved to be tricky as several of the stunning women wore see-through or flimsy tops. Once again, audio was awesome, barring the occasional F-18 landing or taking off from North Island, Coronado, and when the show aired about a month later, we made some popcorn and enjoyed watching “Goldfinger” with a San Diego twist.
