Christchurch! The very name conjures a proper British town with a vintage aura. Just as Oz was for Dorothy, Christchurch became an all-consuming destination for us back in 1982 as Mark and I, brand new lovers, skipped over the emerald fields of New Zealand bearing 35-pound backpacks.

On a Valentine’s Day early in our relationship, Mark presented me with a brand-new Swiss Army knife because we both loved hiking, backpacking, and opening bottles of beer and wine. Little did I know how many wild and amazing adventures on which this knife would accompany us. It stayed in my back pocket much of the time while we rambled around the USA and Alaska on our nine-month journey in 1986. I have had MANY embarrassing moments in my life, but one in particular reigns as THE MOST MORTIFYING.

You need to be in good shape if you engage in a hike like that. Because you’ll be wearing a backpack that will weigh at least 25 pounds with all the essentials. This includes tent, sleeping bag, clothing, food, cookware and of course the obligatory bottle of wine and flask of brandy.

Many visitors to San Diego like to hop aboard a ferry that motors across San Diego Bay, under the Coronado Bridge and docks at Coronado. You can hop off and spend time enjoying the amenities of the island. For instance, you could check out the Hotel Del Coronado and its rich cinematic (and haunted) history. Then hop back onto a later ferry back to San Diego.

One of the most spectacular vacations of our lives happened Australia. It was 1990, and Mark and I decided to backpack up the east coast of Australia. We landed in Melbourne, hitchhiked to Adelaide, visited the oldest mountains in the world, the Flinders Ranges, then crossed over to Sydney, and headed up the coast where we ended our extravaganza with a dive adventure to the Coral Sea and Great Barrier Reef on Mike Ball’s Spoilsport.
