Apolo Anton Ohno on Water

You’ve seen him on ice and on the dance floor.

And now he flies on water.

apolo anton ohnoCrystal Pyramid Productions‘ broadcast video crew shot a day in the life of Olympian and  “Dancing With the Stars” alumnus, Apolo Anton Ohno. That is because CW Now challenged the Olympian to “dance on the water” on one of Bob Montgomery’s jet-powered surf boards.  Seen in the shot are Sound Technician, Patty Mooney, Director of Photography and Videographer, Mark Schulze, Apolo Ono and Bob Montgomery in his silver helmet.

A Great Guy to Work With

Working with Apolo Anton Ono was pretty cool. He’s a very personable guy.  And so athletic.  However, there was only one catch. This surfboard would actually be a Powerski Jetboard that can reach speeds of 40mph, invented by Bob Montgomery, CEO of Powerski. Apolo said, “I speed skate faster than that. How hard could it be?”  How hard, indeed…

The CW Producers called upon Crystal Pyramid Productions to come and shoot Apolo’s trials and errors on the Jetboard. Patty Mooney, Sound Technician, Mark Schulze, DP and Videographer, Apolo Anton Ohno, and CW Producer, Dan Fitzgerald appear in the photograph to the left, and Bob Montgomery’s happy face can be seen in the background

apolo anton ohnoHere Bob Montgomery explains to Apolo Ohno how to use the Jetboard. There’s this one move called the “Flamingo” done standing on one leg and bending to the water with one arm. Bob wonders if Anton can dance like a flamingo.

Apolo knows he can dance and he has stamina. He is envisioning that flamingo thing.

He rises on the board and scoots around the bay.

But the flamingo is elusive.

The crew all watch as Apolo tries and tries again.

After a few practice runs, Apolo comes back to shore, to rest.

He is still working the flamingo out in his head.

Apolo is ready to head out again.

The crew gets into position.  By now Apolo is thinking that San Diego’s Mission Bay in September is a little bit cool.  Mark gets some great shots of Apolo using his Sony HVU digital camera that shoots high-definition format and fits inside an underwater housing. And Apolo gets down into a semi-flamingo.

DP Mark Schulze Hops on the Power Ski

After finishing the videography of Apolo Ohno Bob invites Mark to try out one of the boards. Mark is an accomplished athlete in his own right – he is usually first in the pack on a mountain bike ride, and has been known to enjoy a “hat trick” or two while playing in his soccer league.

Mark stands right up on the board and jams around the Bay.

Bob is quite impressed with Mark’s capabilities. All in all, a great day on the water for everyone.

The video above features clips from the CW show as well as some clips that were shot by Powerski’s videographer. You will even see Mark in a couple of shots.
